Get WordPress Support by asking in a proper manner!

It is a common saying that if you want help then you should ask for it. However, what we often forget is that when we ask for help, we should be polite. This same notion implies on WordPress website help too.

At times, users end up asking for help in a rude way like they are doing by favor by asking a question. If you are asking for help with WordPress that too for free then the least you can do is be gracious.

WordPress help a number of users on a regular basis and provides them with free WordPress Support either via the contact form or their Twitter page. It gets frustrating for them when new users ask questions in an offensive way that too without reading the information that has been shared by them already.

We will be pondering over certain things that you must keep in mind when it comes to contacting the WordPress website help team.

Understand this before contacting WP Support

You should know that WordPress is an open-source community project before you shoot the questions related to a particular plugin or theme. Everyone can create a theme, plugin, suggest bugs or contribute patches to the core. Therefore, the majority of the themes and plugins are free- just like WordPress. It is not necessary for an individual plugin developer or theme author to be a part of the WP core team. If they have released a plugin for free then it is a possibility that they created it in their free time or for a client.

Most of the developers earn via freelance client projects. Even though most of the developers will be willing to help with a few things, each will have an altered point in which they will want to be paid for offering the extra support. The more courteous and grateful you are, the more persuaded they will be to help you out for little or no cost.

How NOT to ask a question?

Always make it a point to be polite when you ask someone something that too without paying for it. A wrong way to ask something would be:

‘What the hell is wrong with the plugin that you have created? Don’t come up with such useless things when all they do is waste the time of others!! Now tell me how to fix it.’

First of all, the developer didn’t personally ask you to download the plugin so if you are facing any issue then you have no right to be disrespectful towards them. Make sure that you have a soft tone or else the other person might just end up ignoring you.

How to ask a question?

The suggested place to ask for support for free plugins is in the support forums. You can find the support forum by visiting the particular plugin’s page on the origin and clicking the support tab. This will make sure that your support question is marked for the plugin author.
Before you create the support thread, ensure that you have read the FAQ page thoroughly. It’s also best to look for the problem to see if someone else has responded to it already.

You should be thankful enough that the developer is taking out time to answer you and it should reflect in your query too. You can start by sharing the points that you have tried from your end to solve the problem. This will show that you are a genuine person who is ACTUALLY using the plugin.
You can try out the below-mentioned format for reference:

Dear developer, I am really thankful that you created this XYZ plugin. However, due to some issues, I am unable to use it in the correct way. It would be great if you could guide me. I would like to share the following details for your reference:

  • WP Version-
  • Plugin’s name and version-
  • The expectation from the plugin-
  • It ended up doing this instead-
  • I came across the following error message-
  • Site is hosted with-
  • Measures are taken to solve the problem-
  • Browsers tried-
  • Additional Remarks
It would be great if you could reach out to me with a solution.

When you send a support message like this, you share all the details that the developer might need to assist you. They might want to see the link to your website and other plugins that are active.
After creating the support thread, you can also connect with the developer over Twitter to get a faster response. You can share the link to the support thread via tweeting.

However, wait for at least 24 hours to get a reply as the author might be in a different time zone and swamped with work.

We hope that by now, you will be clear on asking a doubt properly to WP Support. If you would like to know about anything else then feel free to get in touch with us.
